Hurricane Damages over Decades

visit detail page
This iChart shows the damage caused by hurricanes in the US by decade from 1900-2005, with the figures of Gustave / Ike and Katrina and Okeechobee added for comparison. The values are normalized to the current economical situation by methods described in the source, a scientific article of the University of Colorado (published in the NATURAL HAZARDS REVIEW © ASCE / FEBRUARY 2008, by Roger A. Pielke Jr.; Joel Gratz; Christopher W. Landsea; Douglas Collins; Mark A. Saunders; and Rade Musulin with title; Normalized Hurricane Damage in the United States: 1900-2005). Usually a hurricane of category 4 causes a damage of a couple of billion dollars when hitting land. The decade 1995-2005 would have been much more normal without Katrina. The Katrina disaster with breaking dikes at New Orleans caused the peak in that period with a Katrina contribution of about 89 billion. The average damage per decade is at about 90 billion dollars. There is a second peak in the period 1926-1935 which was caused by the Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928. I devastated Florida and caused a normalized damage of 81 billion dollars which is in the same order of magnitude of Katrina. The damage potential of a Hurricane depends always on the route of the storm over land because the more populated an area is the bigger the damage will be.
