1. Get Out Of Your Pajamas
When you do not have to leave your home for work, it is always tempting to stay in your comfortable pajamas all day. However, this is a practice that should be avoided, as it generally affect productivity in a bad way. You should have a habit of changing into everyday clothes, whether you work or not. Subconsciously, you will still feel like you are lying in a bed, and it the general feeling is as if you are about to go back to sleep any second.
2. Set an Alarm
Generally, working early in the morning is what most people prefer. Therefore, if you have trouble waking up without one, set up an alarm. Start your day early. For example, if you wish to start working around 9am, wake up at 8am. You will do much more and feel better than if you wake up at 10am. If you are not a morning person, this will probably not work for you. Still, give it a shot, as you can always go back.
3. Have a Clearly Separate Working Space
Working from the couch can never be as productive as when you are situated behind a desk. Design your own workspace corner. You do not need a whole office, as all it takes is a desk, a comfortable chair, and anything that makes you relaxed and productive around your computer. A place where it will be easy to enter “work mode” is what you have to create. Try to always work when sitting in that place. Do not use it for eating, social media, games, or movies. As long as you keep it professional while there, you will be productive.
4. Outline Your Daily Tasks
Set goals for yourself which you need to reach by the end of your work time. When you outline your tasks like this, you will not waste time on deciding what to do next. It is extremely easy to get distracted and loose the sense of time and urgency if you do not plan ahead. Always know what must be done in a day. If you push yourself more and set higher goals, you will achieve more, simple as that. There is a saying that if you have a long time to do something, you will take longer to actually do it. Therefore, make a strict schedule and keep to it.
5. Schedule Breaks and Take Them
It is difficult to actually take proper breaks when you work from home. This is partially because you can just hop out of your chair at any time and go to the bathroom, make a cup of coffee or grab a quick bite. Then again, you can also work while eating or watching something. After a work day of this, your mind will be more tired than if you did these things on proper, planned breaks. They are important, and you should have them throughout your schedule. You will actually be more productive with breaks, than if you just work non-stop. However, keep it within reasonable times. Breaks that last about 15 minutes are great. Spend it anywhere except the working area and away from the phone. Other than these short periods of break time, take a longer break to have lunch I the middle of your “shift”.
6. Spend Time on Social Media Only When You Need it for Work
Social media is a hazard for both free time, and the time you need to spend working. Before you know it, you will spend an hour scrolling through Instagram or Facebook, or watching dumb videos on YouTube. If you need it for work, it can be even worse. Therefore, make sure to only use it during work if it is absolutely necessary to complete an important task. For example, getting in touch with people quickly through Messenger or Instagram. When it is “work mode time”, social media must not interfere. Leave it for the rest of the day.
7. Have A Work Buddy to Check on You
If you live alone, this is tricky. If you however live with someone, anyone, ask them to frequently check up on you, to make sure you are not distracted. It helps if they too have to work or study, or do some important house work. Check on each other and push each other to do more and be better. For those who live alone, social media must come into place, or at least a phone call. People who care for you will take time to send a caring reminder that you have important work on your schedule.
8. Listen To Productivity Music
This does not work for everyone, as some people can be distracted by music in the background. If you are one of the lucky people who does not get easily distracted, go for it! Find some tunes that work for you, as everyone responds differently to different genres of music. If it works for you, you will be more relaxed and productive. If it does not work, stop doing it. It just means that you want to completely focus on one thing.
9. Give Yourself a Bridge to the Next Day
This is a great rick. By giving yourself a bridge, you leave a task unfinished when you stop working for the day, and then start from there first the next day. When you do this, you will already have something to start your day with, and it takes away the uncertainty at least for a little bit. It will also provide a feeling of a “good start of the day”, because you will complete something early on.
