How to clean a poly foam and memory foam mattress

Poly foam or what is also known as polyurethane foam is the common foam material that you will find in many mattresses that have that neutral-foam touch. It is so soft that it feels like you are touching the cloud.

Memory foam, on the other hand, is mainly a petroleum kind of material that reacts slowly when pressure is applied to it like when it compresses and contours around you when laying down. Memory foam is not as responsive as poly foam. But whichever one you use, here’s how to clean them out:

Use a cleaning solution

The best way to get rid of stains and other dirt particles on your mattress is by using a cleaning solution. And no, we do not recommend using bleach or any product that contains ammonia as they can be too harsh for your foam. To get the right cleaning solution, mix white vinegar or a half cup of fabric cleaner with a cup of water. Shake well and then spray sparingly on the mattress to avoid getting the mattress wet. Gently scrub off any stains after spraying. You can also use a steam cleaner when cleaning memory foam mattresses.

Deodorize the mattress

You can clean your mattress by spraying a little baking soda all over your mattress. It’s okay to spray it if the mattress is still wet. After cleaning, open up your windows, put on the fan to let the mattress dry. If you can, you can take the mattress out under the sun to dry.

Vacuum

A great way to clean your mattress is to make use of a vacuum cleaner to clean it. You can use the one with a brush attachment or the handheld type to vacuum-clean your mattress. Doing so will ensure that crumbs and surface particles do not get deep into the foam. Make sure to reach every part of the mattress especially the top and around the sides.

Vacuum again

This procedure is important if you deodorized your mattress with baking soda as explained in the second step above. When you vacuum the mattress, you get to get rid of all traces of baking soda on your mattress. If your mattress is such that can be flipped, make sure you do so to reach all sides.

Cleaning a Latex mattress

Latex foams are made from rubber tree saps and usually feels airy and bouncy. The inside of latex foams is perforated leaving tiny holes that encourage good airflow. When maintained properly, latex mattress can last for a very long time.

Use a cleaning solution

Just like other mattresses we mentioned above, do not use bleach or strong solvent when cleaning your latex mattress. You should also avoid steam cleaners because when used for some time it can lead to baking of the latex foam. To clean your mattress, you should make use of isopropyl alcohol or a mild detergent with water. Choose a white rag or sponge to avoid dyeing the mattress with whatever color that the colored rag has. Then gently blot the mattress without rubbing it to prevent it from tearing.

Deodorize

Sprinkle some baking soda on your latex mattress. This is for the dirt and odors to be soaked up. You can dry it under the sun but not for long since the cellular structure of such mattress can breakdown. It is best to let it dry indoors or dry with a blow dryer on the lowest setting. When the mattress is dry again, vacuum the mattress to get rid of all the baking soda. And then you can spread a clean sheet on the mattress.
